THE EFFECT OF DRUG CONVICTIONS ON STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
Practicing criminal defense law in Ithaca, NY brings a specific student focus to many legal issues. Many Cornell University and Ithaca College students receive financial aid in various forms. Concerns over the affect that a conviction of any type could have on their current lifestyle, future plans, and career prospects are always at the forefront of any legal consultation. Most students are unaware that any conviction for the sale or possession of illegal drugs leads to some harsh collateral consequences.President Clinton originally signed the legislation that amended Higher Education Act (H.R. 6) which mandated that "A student who has been convicted of any offense under any Federal or State law involving the possession or sale of a controlled substance shall not be eligible to receive any federal grant, loan, or work study program." This was amended in 2006 to block eligibility for Federal financial aid only when the offense occurred during the period of time when the student was receiving aid.The controlling law is 20 U.S.C. section 1091 (r) (1) which suspends eligibility for any federal grant, federal loan, or federal work study financial assistance for students convicted of any offense under State or Federal law involving the possession or the ... MONEY FOR COLLEGE — MOST STUDENTS DO GET FINANCIAL AID AND SO CAN YOU
Trying to finance a college education can be a pretty daunting task these days. Somehow the college fund that we all should have started when our kids were three years old got spent during a period of unemployment before that child got out of grade school. Or even if those contributions got made we just did not believe the expenses would rise the way they have, and the college savings fund is, well, underfunded. Right now, when you add in tuition, fees, room, board, books and other expenses for a public 4 year university, and that is with resident tuition rates, it is easy to look at a bill that pushes $20,000 a year! Multiply that $20K by 4 years, and you can see that a student, and his or her family, needs to come up with about $80,000! A private school will cost even more, and many start at $30,000 a year, or even more! Now consider that most families do not just have one child, but must help multiple kids get through school. Many families, or students, need to take out loans. These loans, usually, do not have to be paid back until the graduate has been out of ... [more..]

INCREASING ENROLLMENT
This is one of a group of articles, which focus on recruiting students. In this article and the future articles, we assume that the marketing effort, reputation, and word of mouth (parent and other referral sources) are causing families to investigate enrollment. Our thoughts on marketing, reputation, and generating word of mouth will appear in future articles. When the family is at your door what happens next?Do you have a formal intake process? What is the profile of a successful student? It is doubtful that every child will become a student. Some children have special needs. Those needs might be physical, academic, emotional, spiritual, or social and beyond the capacity of the parochial school. No one is all things to all people. The formal intake process provides a few practical benefits:When a disappointed parent challenges the decision to turn away a child, there are facts and criteria documenting the reasons. This helps to deflect concerns about discrimination, favoritism, or injustice. It creates a consistent process that several people can use successfully. This eliminates the dependence on one person. It makes scheduling a visit easier on prospective families. It alerts everyone to the needs of the student and makes it easier to meet the expectations of ... [more..]
