JOE LACOB Q&A – SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (BLOG)
Joe Lacob Q&A
Joe Lacob, who along with Peter Guber, entered the winning bid to buy the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, fought off two sleepless nights to sit through a Q&A. Here's what he had to say about being part of the Warriors' new ownership group:
What are your emotions on the day you bought the Golden State Warriors? I'm incredibly excited. This has been an incredible process. I don't know many people who have ever gone through anything like this. This is not just buying a company. This was an auction against some very wealthy people and very talented and capable people. To win this thing is fantastic. It's amazing. We also think we'll have the right process going forward, and we think we're the right people to do it.
How much can you say about the final days of the process? I don't think I should comment too much on that. We did a lot of diligence, were in early and stayed in. Contrary to anything that we heard or read, we decided that none of that was relevant. We felt we knew what the franchise was worth, we felt we knew what we were buying and we executed on ... ROMAN POLANSKI EXTRADITION REJECTION TOP TWITTER TREND; POLANSKI FREE – SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (BLOG)
Roman Polanski extradition rejection top Twitter trend; Polanski free
Roman Polanski's still such a hot topic that when the news that his extradition to the United States was denied by the Swiss today, Monday, it was a top Twitter trend and a "hot topic" on Google Trends at the same time.
A rare development; the reason for the Roman Polanski extradition rejection is not just that Polanski goes free after being charged with unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in a case 33 years old, but that he was freed on a technicality.
According to The New York Times, Switzerland Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf told a news conference that 76-year-old Polanski was set free because of a possible technicality: American law enforcement rejected Justice Widmer-Schlumpf's request for the records of Roger Gunson, a prosecutor in the case.
Those records were to show if Gunson did claim that Polanski's stay in a psychiatric unit counted as jail time. So because America rejected Justice Widmer-Schlumpf's request, she rejected America's extradition request.
Basically, the U.S. Justice Department screwed up on this one. Polanski is free from house arrest and can go home to France.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES CASH IN ON FOREIGN STUDENTS – SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
Homegrown students may have trouble getting into classes, but community colleges in California are having no problem finding room for foreign students who pay top dollar to come here - and provide millions of dollars for the schools.
Take the Peralta Community College District in the East Bay, which recruits an estimated 800 to 1,000 students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Israel each year, according to a new Alameda County civil grand jury report.
Foreign students pay ,332 apiece for 12 units per year - compared with 4 for students who come from in state. The foreign aid translated to more than million this year for Peralta.
"It's not just Peralta - the jury found that everybody does it. It's a real moneymaker," said Jeff Stark, the Alameda County prosecutor who advised the investigation into the program's costs.
Peralta even has its own foreign recruitment office - including a full-time director who hunts the globe for students and a staff of eight full-time and 14 part-time workers.
The grand jury questioned whether for-profit students are, in effect, buying up class seats that could go to locals. But Peralta spokesman Jeff Heyman called the influx "good news on every front."
"It generates revenue and makes ... [more..]
‘THE GLADES’ BEST OF NEW SUMMER COP SHOWS – CALIFORNIA CHRONICLE
By Roger Catlin, The Hartford Courant, Conn. July 11--There's a glut of summer cop shows this year, largely on cable, cashing in on their foothold for character development, sense of humor, action and sense of place. The best new title this week is "The Glades" (tonight at 10), an unusual first run scripted show for A&E. It stars Aussie actor Matt Passmore as an annoying but ultimately charming new cop in fictional Palm Glade, Fla., who immediately distinguishes himself in a sleepy department where he's been paired with a lazy partner: He oversteps his bounds at the golf course, taping off a green until he can finish a game. He spends a lot of time trying to woo a comely nurse played by Callie Cargill, but they spend at least as much time on the twisting crime, at least in the breezy first episode. Also with promise is "Covert Affairs" (USA, Tuesday, 10 p.m.) in which Piper Perabo (of "Coyote Ugly" fame) stars as a CIA recruit with nerve and looks, going deep undercover as a call girl in her first assignment. From the producers of the "Bourne" series of films, it's got a strong ... [more..]
