BRITISH OPEN 2010 PRIZE MONEY GOES UP: OOSTHUIZEN WINS BIG – ONLY KENT (BLOG)
The British Open 2010 reached its conclusion earlier on today and it was Louis Oosthuizen that won in big style, in more ways than one. The challenging weather conditions at The Old Course, St. Andrews in Scotland had made life tough for all the players, but it was Oosthuizen who gained his first-ever majors win, amazingly 7-shots clear at the finish (see earlier article).Now many of you are wondering what the prize money is for the British Open Championship 2010. In spite of the current economic climate you may be surprised to know the overall prize fund actually rose this year, for the first time since 2006. The total purse has risen by £600,000 this year to take the amount to £4.8 million, according to The Press Association. The British Open winners club welcomed a new member today. Out of all British Open winners, there has rarely been such a surprising British Open champion as Louis Oosthuizen. The eventual winner went off at 200-1 odds, as only European Tour followers and South African golf fans knew who he was. When he shot up to second place on Thursday, he was expected to fall off quickly, and was still expected to fade after taking the lead. But he never faltered, and no one had enough to match his pace. As such, the British Open winners now include a man whose last name was mispronounced all week.Today, Oosthuizen squared off with Paul Casey in the last pairing, as they separated themselves from the pack yesterday. Casey was ranked 10'th in the world and had England on his side, while Oosthuizen was still trying to win over doubters. He had a four shot lead going in, but had never faced a day like this before.Out of all possible British Open winners this week, Oosthuizen was among the least likely.
