WEEKEND TOP 10: US OPEN OF SURFING, LOWRIDER NATIONALS AND MORE
Joanna Newsom Joanna Newsom?s 2004 debut album, ?The Milk-Eyed Mender,? introduced the world to the idiosyncrasies for which she is both adored and derided: her distinctive trill, her fanciful lyrics, her rarefied take on freak-folk, her instrument of choice (the pedal harp). On her follow-up, ?Ys,? and her latest release, the triple album ?Have One On Me,? she?s no less eccentric and ? like it or not ? rather more ambitious. Orpheum Theater, 842 S. BRITISH OPEN 2010 PRIZE MONEY GOES UP: OOSTHUIZEN WINS BIG – ONLY KENT (BLOG)
The British Open 2010 reached its conclusion earlier on today and it was Louis Oosthuizen that won in big style, in more ways than one. The challenging weather conditions at The Old Course, St. Andrews in Scotland had made life tough for all the players, but it was Oosthuizen who gained his first-ever majors win, amazingly 7-shots clear at the finish (see earlier article). Now many of you are wondering what the prize money is for the British Open Championship 2010. In spite of the current economic climate you may be surprised to know the overall prize fund actually rose this year, for the first time since 2006. The total purse has risen by £600,000 this year to take the amount to £4.8 million, according to The Press Association. If you want an easy currency converter to see what that is wherever you are then go here. The defending champion, Stuart Cink, took home £750,000 last year, but Louis Oosthuizen will collect £850,000 this year. The rise in the purse is apparently due to the weak pound against the US Dollar and the Euro. Second-placed Lee Westwood will take home £500,000 and even the player at the bottom of ... [more..]
BRITISH OPEN WINNERS NOW INCLUDE SURPRISING OOSTHUIZEN – ASSOCIATED CONTENT
The British Open winners club welcomed a new member today. Out of all British Open winners, there has rarely been such a surprising British Open champion as Louis Oosthuizen. The eventual winner went off at 200-1 odds, as only European Tour followers and South African golf fans knew who he was. When he shot up to second place on Thursday, he was expected to fall off quickly, and was still expected to fade after taking the lead. But he never faltered, and no one had enough to match his pace. As such, the British Open winners now include a man whose last name was mispronounced all week.Today, Oosthuizen squared off with Paul Casey in the last pairing, as they separated themselves from the pack yesterday. Casey was ranked 10'th in the world and had England on his side, while Oosthuizen was still trying to win over doubters. He had a four shot lead going in, but had never faced a day like this before.Out of all possible British Open winners this week, Oosthuizen was among the least likely. He had never even made the cut at a Open, and missed the cut at the Masters and U.S Open. His only wins ... [more..]

BRITISH OPEN 2010: JOHN DALY FASHIONS HIS OWN PEACE AT ST. ANDREWS – WASHINGTON POST
He was startlingly visible on the fairways of St. Andrews in Thursday's opening of the British Open, in his robin's egg blue cap, salmon pink shirt, violet vest, and those slacks that looked like cheap motel curtains. But there was no drunk-tank behavior, no teeing off on a beer can. There was just a telltale plume of cigarette smoke -- a lingering vice -- and a series of solid, charismatic cracks off the tee, the sounds of strength meeting ease. His seven-birdie opening round of 66 was one of his most aggressive, yet rational, performances in a major championship since he won the 1995 British Open here.
The guy who used to be known as "Wild Thing" apparently is in need of a new nickname. What should we call him now?
"I don't know," he said. "Mild thing?"
It's risky to say anything definitive about Daly, given the whirls of his personal and professional lives, the heartbreaking dissipation, binges, divorces, and compulsive gambling that caused a winless streak from '95 to 2004. But he may be in the midst of a genuine resurgence.
He staggered through a disastrous 2008 in which he hurt his ribs, earned a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour for ... [more..]
