DEZ BRYANT’S REFUSAL TO BE HAZED SHOWS TYPE OF ATTITUDE COWBOYS HAVE MISSED
Dez Bryant's Refusal to Be Hazed Shows Type of Attitude Cowboys Have Missed Rookie hazing is a part of every sport, most notably football. Every summer at training camps across the country, rookies are taped to goalposts, forced to sing their college fight songs at dinner and pick up doughnuts on the way into work. In some cases, they're also called upon to carry the pads of veteran players. One Dallas Cowboy rookie, Dez Bryant, decided he wasn't going to go along with that one when he refused to carry veteran and fellow wide receiver Roy Williams' shoulder pads. And you know what? Good for Dez Bryant. Bryant comes to the Cowboys with high expectations. Despite a few off-field incidents and controversies, the Cowboys have faith in Bryant to be an eventual No. 1 receiver in the years to come. They're so confident in Bryant's abilities that they gave the rookie the No. 88 jersey that was once worn by Hall of Fame wideout Michael Irvin. And with this refusal to carry Williams' pads, Bryant may be displaying a type of attitude that the Cowboys haven't seen since those same days of Irvin, Troy Aikman and ... [more..]
ANDRE DAWSON SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR CUBS FANS AT HALL OF FAME
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - The love affair between Andre Dawson and the Cubs' bleacher fans, so evident in his MVP season in 1987 and until he departed after 1992, continues. Dawson paid a series of tributes to Cubs fans on Sunday, when he joined manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey, in being inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. "I almost gave up baseball or went to Japan," Dawson said about the winter of 1986-87, when Montreal offered him a pay cut and teams were slow in stepping up to sign him. "I knew there had to be a place where the game could be fun again. I found that place. It's called Wrigley Field. It reminded that if you love the game, it will love you back." With Cub Hall of Famers Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg seated behind him, Dawson delivered a humble, heart-felt speech that centered largely on his six seasons in Chicago. "All I ever wanted growing up was to be like Hank Aaron and Willie Mays," Dawson said. "Now I get to shake their hand and be treated like a friend." About the Chicago years, Dawson: ? Acknowledged the sacrifices ... [more..]

‘THE GLADES’ BEST OF NEW SUMMER COP SHOWS – CALIFORNIA CHRONICLE
By Roger Catlin, The Hartford Courant, Conn. July 11--There's a glut of summer cop shows this year, largely on cable, cashing in on their foothold for character development, sense of humor, action and sense of place. The best new title this week is "The Glades" (tonight at 10), an unusual first run scripted show for A&E. It stars Aussie actor Matt Passmore as an annoying but ultimately charming new cop in fictional Palm Glade, Fla., who immediately distinguishes himself in a sleepy department where he's been paired with a lazy partner: He oversteps his bounds at the golf course, taping off a green until he can finish a game. He spends a lot of time trying to woo a comely nurse played by Callie Cargill, but they spend at least as much time on the twisting crime, at least in the breezy first episode. Also with promise is "Covert Affairs" (USA, Tuesday, 10 p.m.) in which Piper Perabo (of "Coyote Ugly" fame) stars as a CIA recruit with nerve and looks, going deep undercover as a call girl in her first assignment. From the producers of the "Bourne" series of films, it's got a strong ... [more..]

He pares the group down to 17 in the opening episode.ESPN's James Walker found this gem of a line from Ochocinco in the episode:"Man, I haven't seen this many girls on a football field since the last time we played the Steelers."This is Ochocinco's second foray into TV this offseason, following his stint on "Dancing with the Stars" this spring. His time away from the Bengals drew him a public rebuke from QB Carson Palmer in June.Owens checked in for the second season of "The T.O. Show" immediately after Ochocinco's show.
