SAM BRADFORD, TIM TEBOW SIGN CONTRACTS: WHO SIGNS NEXT?
Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images Two key camp holdouts were avoided in the NFL late this week as Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow both agreed to contracts. Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick, reportedly signed with the Rams for million over six years, with million guaranteed, in the wee hours of Saturday morning. That's an almost absurd amount of money, but the quarterback "premium," along with his No. 1 overall slot, guaranteed his contract would have to be nothing short of staggering. Tebow signed a five-year, million contract, with .75 million guaranteed, on Thursday. Signing first-round draft picks always has had a certain amount of drama to it, as the players and agents duel with the front office to maximize what, for some, will be their only big-money contract. For the Rams, they need look no further than Oakland and the fresh wound that is JaMarcus Russell to know just how badly missing on a No. 1 overall quarterback pick can screw up a team. Students at Detroit schools are leaving before graduation at a disturbing rate. Depending on which estimate you believe, the number ranges from 34 to 68%. Whichever number you decide is the right one, these levels are still far too high.Students at Detroit Schools Must Stay Long Enough to GraduateThe world today is much different from the one that many of us grew up in. There was a point in time when a person could leave school before graduation and be able to support themselves. Jobs in manufacturing and office administration were readily available. That is no longer the case.In order to have a chance of being able to qualify for good-paying jobs, students attending Detroit schools need to stay long enough to graduate. A high school diploma is only a starting point now; after these young people have finished their education at Detroit schools, they should be planning on attending college or university.Teachers and administrators at Detroit schools should be looking for signs that a student is having difficulty in school and is at risk for dropping out.
