TMZ CAPTURES ROGER HUERTA STREET FIGHT VIDEO – SPORTS NEWSCASTER
Published: August 6, 2010 It is not a footage from another action film. Part-time actor and mixed martial arts fighter Roger Huerta was captured in a street fight on Saturday morning in Austin, Texas. The former UFC lightweight contender who is now under contract with Bellator ran after a man who was caught punching a woman. Huerta, who is nicknamed “El Matador” charged at the attacker saying “You just punched a f**kin girl.”. The TMZ crew did not get to capture all the action as bystanders blocked the camera while the fight was going on. Towards the end of the scuffle, Huerta was reportedly stomping on the head of the male attacker. Huerta recently appeared in a movie adaptation of the hit fight video game “Tekken”. No arrests were reported, according to TMZ. There are no updates yet on how Bellator as his fight promoter will sanction any disciplinary actions. This may cause serious implications on his fighting and acting career. However, there are mixed reactions on Huerta’s actions as he beat up a man who physically assaulted a woman. ... [more..]
TUESDAY’S SPORTS IN BRIEF
BASEBALL WASHINGTON (AP) -Rookie sensation Stephen Strasburg was diagnosed with inflammation in his pitching shoulder after being scratched from his scheduled start for the Washington Nationals because he had problems warming up his prized and powerful right arm. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Strasburg had "stiffness and discomfort'' in his right shoulder, but an MRI and X-ray show no structural damage. The Nationals did not make Strasburg available for comment, saying he went for tests immediately after he encountered trouble. Rizzo said Strasburg is day to day and he's not certain when the righty will pitch next. PRO FOOTBALL NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL will distribute a new poster to teams that warns of the dangers from concussions in much harsher language than the league had previously used. Traumatic brain injury "may lead to problems with memory and communication, personality changes, as well as depression and the early onset of dementia,'' the document reads. The acknowledgment of such risks is a significant change from a pamphlet previously distributed to players, starting in 2007. Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, co-chairman of the NFL committee that studies concussions, said that recent research influenced the changes in wording. COLUMBUS, Ohio ... [more..]
CBS SPORTS: BADGERS AMONG COLLEGE SPORTS’ BEST – UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN BADGERS
July 26, 2010 MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin fans are well aware of their Badgers' success on the gridiron and the hardwood. CBSSports.com has taken notice, too, and placed Wisconsin at No. 4 in its "Flourishing Five" series that highlights the programs most consistently fielding winners in football and men's basketball. In fact, when it comes to dual-sport success, only one team can match the Badgers' record over the past decade. Wisconsin and Texas are the only two programs in the nation to send their men's basketball teams to the NCAA tournament and their football squads to a bowl game in each of the last eight seasons. Senior writers Dennis Dodd and Gary Parrish feature the Badgers in a pair of stories plastered on the front page of CBSSports.com Monday. Dodd tackles the Badgers' success in football, offering up insights from senior quarterback Scott Tolzien and Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez. His piece focuses on how the Badgers have found sustained success by not shying away from the brand of football that Alvarez brought to Madison in the 1990s. This section of Dodd's piece, "Badgers' powerful football program built with power" begins with a quote from ... [more..]
BASEBALL’S HOME RUN DERBY 2010: MITCH’S FREE PICK AND PREVIEW – SPORTS CHAT PLACE
Chris Young, CF, Arizona Diamondbacks Current Odds: 8-1
Chris Young was added to the Home Run Derby as a late addition as many others turned down a spot in the contest. Young is the Diamondbacks representative in the All Star Game. History tells us that it isn't remotely out of the realm of possibility that Young wins this thing. Young was a 16th round draft choice in 2001, the 493rd player taken overall.
Corey Hart, RF, Milwaukee Brewers Current Odds: 6.5-1
On a team of players who can really hit the long ball like Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun, it's been Hart who leads the team in homers with 21. Hart's average is on the rise and he might be a decent sleeper in this spot. Hart was an 11th round draft choice in 2000.
David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox Current Odds: 2.5-1
For the past two years people have been ready to write off David Ortiz as being done but both times Ortiz has shaken off the critics and proved that he was just in a slump, the same kind most Major Leaguer's go through from time to time. Ortiz has 18 homers this season as he's tied for the team lead in ... [more..]
