PEDRO BARROS, 15, TAKES GOLD IN SKATEBOARD PARK AT X GAMES
Fifteen-year-old rookie Pedro Barros beat 37-year-old veteran Andy MacDonald to win Skateboard Park on Sunday at a games previously dominated by repeat winners and older athletes. Skateboard Park was designed to allow young skaters versed in street style to compete with the older riders of vert ramps, and this year's finals went just according to plan, with all the competitors either teens in jeans or pad-and-helmet-wearing thirty-somethings. Ryan Sheckler was the youngest winner of this event at 13 in 2003, but the Brazilian Barros becomes the first athlete who wasn't born when the X Games began to win a gold. He used a combination of stunning 540 airs and grinding slides on the elaborate course at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles to reach a final score of 86 out of 100. Barros said it was "sick" to win gold in his first X Games. He didn't think youth was overtaking age in pro skateboarding just yet, but didn't deny that his youthful exuberance helped. "We're young, so we get more energy," Barros said of the teens in the final. "We just get more hyped up." McDonald won silver with a score of 81 and 17-year-old ... [more..]

‘WINNEBAGO MAN’ TAKES SINCERE JOURNEY
“Winnebago Man” is a modest, sincere tribute to a crank, one that by its final frame earns its sentiment honestly. Director Ben Steinbauer narrates the story of how he was entranced by a four-minute video clip of outtakes from a 1989 industrial film - a hilarious example of nonstop profanity and extreme irritability. The “star” was Jack Rebney, in white shirt and tie, whose flustered, frustrated, raging rant in Iowa’s summer heat as he tried to extol the virtues of a Winnebago RV had become a cult item, passed from friend to friend on blurry VHS copies. When YouTube arrived, the four-minute “Winnebago Man” clip became a viral video, seen by millions who loved seeing The Angriest Man in the World. Steinbauer saw how the cult of Rebney had infiltrated pop culture - film and TV clips show Ben Affleck and others repeating Rebney’s foul-mouthed phrases - and set out to find him. Rebney, 76, was living alone in a cabin atop a northern California mountain as caretaker for a fishing club. Still cantankerous and indifferent to his celebrity, Rebney and the filmmaker have several give-and-take meetings. Then Steinbauer discovers that Rebney has gone blind. At this juncture “Winnebago ... [more..]
RICKY GERVAIS TAKES CONTROL – THE GUARDIAN
'I’m not playing the popularity game. If you’re trying to be popular you’ll be anodyne – trying to please other people rather than yourself.'
Photograph: Levon Biss for the ObserverRicky Gervais doesn't actually want to rule the world, or at least not all of it. He just wants absolute total control over his small corner of it. Although it's not that small. The Office is now a global phenomenon: it's been sold to more than 80 countries and, after an American, Brazilian, French, German and Russian version, it's about to be re-incarnated in Israel, complete with "an ultra-orthodox saleswoman", "an embittered Russian accountant" and, in the main role, a Jewish David Brent, otherwise known as Avi Meshulam. Then there's his podcasts – basically the recorded ramblings of him and his long-time collaborator Stephen Merchant and his old producer at Xfm, Karl Pilkington – which have now been downloaded more than 200m times. And there's the HBO animation of them which is currently being broadcast as The Ricky Gervais Show on Channel 4. And Gervais's new TV show, Life's Too Short, about the trials of a showbiz dwarf, the pilot for ... [more..]
