CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR TAKES ON ABC NEWS’ ‘THIS WEEK’
By FRAZIER MOORE (AP) – 3 hours ago NEW YORK — Saying she's "eager to open a window on the world," ABC's Christiane Amanpour has joined the company of Sunday political talk hosts.Amanpour claimed her role at "This Week" on Sunday, replacing George Stephanopoulos on the show that competes with NBC's "Meet the Press," CBS' "Face the Nation" and "Fox News Sunday."She appeared comfortable and aggressively inquisitive in her new position.Guests on her first broadcast were Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Both interviews were pretaped — a double departure from the usual live nature of the Sunday shows. But mostly the hour format stuck closely to the past. The second half consisted of the traditional round-table analysis by a trio of familiar faces: journalist George Will, political strategist Donna Brazile and economist Paul Krugman, along with Pakistani journalist and Taliban expert Ahmed Rashid, from Madrid."This Week" continues to originate from Washington's Newseum, but the show is newly billed as "from all across our world to the heart of our nation's capital.""Having witnessed firsthand the global challenges and opportunities that America faces every day, I'm also eager to open a window on the world and ... TECHNOLOGY SENDS LATEST ‘SHARK WEEK’ AIRBORNE AGAIN
Specials Employ Super Slo-Mo, High-Speed HD Cameras Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 8/1/2010 7:53:44 AM Discovery Channel will add technological twists to two of its specials, when it kicks off its 23rd annual "Shark Week" programming stunt on Sunday night.Ten years ago, Discovery premiered Air Jaws, famous for its image of a one-ton great white shark launching itself from the water for a sneak attack on seals off the coast of South Africa. The film ranked as the fifth-most-watched Shark Week special ever, according to officials at the programmer. On Aug. 1 at 9 p.m., Discovery will begin this year's Shark Week with the one-hour Ultimate Air Jaws, where producer Jeff Kurr returns to the scene this time armed with state-of-the-art HD equipment. Kurr and crew filmed the episode with an HD camera that shoots in super slow motion -- 2,000 frames per second, 20 to 30 times slower than typical slow-mo footage.Kurr and shark expert Chris Fallows slow down the footage of a breaching shark from one second in real time to almost a full minute. The resolution provides so much detail viewers can count every tooth in ... [more..]
SINK YOUR TEETH INTO ‘SHARK WEEK’
Cue the “Jaws” soundtrack. Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” returns today for its 23rd year with new shows sure to keep you out of the water. Among the many specials, “Ultimate Air Jaws” (tonight at 9) follows the phenomenon explored 10 years ago in “Air Jaws.” A one-ton great white can propel itself into the air at speeds close to 25 mph when attacking a seal from below in open water. This show digs deeper to explore the behavior. As amazing as it is to witness the breach - as the jumps are called - equally amazing is that seals sometimes escape. Producers Jeff Kurr and Chris Fallows use super-slow-motion cameras to explore their theory that the force created by the shark moving through the water at that speed causes a pressure change that seals can detect, giving them a split-second to react. The resulting footage yields a shot of a great white in mid-air so detailed that it demonstrates the sensitivity of the animal’s jaw. Fallows also gets into a custom-built protective raft for some close encounters with a great white. “Shark Bite Beach” (Tuesday at 9 p.m.) explores a series of fatal attacks in California and Mexico in 2008. ...
