Updated at 11:05 p.m. By Aaron Blake Former Georgia governor Roy Barnes(D) won his party's nomination for governor Tuesday, while former secretary of state Karen Handel and former congressman Nathan Deal qualified for an Aug. 10 runoff on the GOP side. Barnes defeated state Attorney General Thurbert Baker and five other Democrats in his race, getting nearly two-thirds of the vote. The Democratic Governors Association aims to be competitive for a seat now held by a Republican, Sonny Perdue, and Democrats are hopeful that Barnes's decisive win, while Republicans are still settling on a candidate, will give him a leg up in November. Handel and Deal led five rivals in the Republican race. With four-fifths of the vote in, Handel was first at 33 percent, while Deal took the second spot with 24 percent of the vote. The British Open 2010 reached its conclusion earlier on today and it was Louis Oosthuizen that won in big style, in more ways than one. The challenging weather conditions at The Old Course, St. Andrews in Scotland had made life tough for all the players, but it was Oosthuizen who gained his first-ever majors win, amazingly 7-shots clear at the finish (see earlier article).Now many of you are wondering what the prize money is for the British Open Championship 2010. In spite of the current economic climate you may be surprised to know the overall prize fund actually rose this year, for the first time since 2006. The total purse has risen by £600,000 this year to take the amount to £4.8 million, according to The Press Association. The town of Jim Thorpe, PA is facing a legal battle with the legendary athlete's son, who is demanding his remains be exumed and transported back to Oklahoma-where he's from.  His son resents having his father's remains exploited as a tourist attraction and is suing to have them returned. Outside of the state of Pennsylvania, Jim Thorpe is an obscure town to many.  For those of us in PA and even South Jersey, it's a great place to visit and is reminisicient of New Hope and the likes.  The town of Jim Thorpe got it namesake when they stepped up and offered to bury Jim Thorpe when his hometown in Oklahoma refused to bury him.  They purchased the remains from his third wife and erected a monument in his honor.  Thus, the town of Mach Chunk became Jim Thorpe.  Even if Jim Thorpe's son wins the case it's unlikely to destroy the town as the writer from sportsgrid.com states. Anaheim, CA, United States (AHN) - David “Big Papi” Ortiz, who has been written off as a fading star in each of the past two seasons, hammered 11 home runs in the finale, as he held off a brief rally by Hanley Ramirez Monday to win the 2010 edition of the MLB Home Run Derby. The 34-year-old Dominican native barged into the semis after detonating most of his eight blasts down the right field line. He placed third in the field of eight after the opening round. The top four advanced into the second round, which included the Brewers’ Corey Hart, who had 13, followed by Ramirez (nine), Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera (eight). Hart failed to maintain the Brewers reign of the HR Derby, which was dominated last year by teammate Prince Fielder, as he was eliminated along with Cabrera in the second stage of the annual home run bash.
